Sapienza - University of Rome is an Italian state university founded in 1303, among the oldest in Italy and the world.
It was founded by Pope Boniface VIII, that on 20 April 1303, with the papal bull In Supremae praeminentia Dignitatis, instituted aRoma the Studium Urbis. With about 115,000 students total, in 2016 it is the largest university in Europe.
The campus has been realized by a number of rationalist architects during the thirties, at the height of the Fascist period. The work, strongly wanted by Mussolini so that even the capital of Italy had its university center, s'inquadrava in the restoration that involved the city until the Second World War. The city was inaugurated March 31, 1935 in the presence of King Vittorio Emanuele III.
Inside the city there are also a nursery, bars, banks and post offices, many libraries and museums open to the public. Notable is the largest university chapel dedicated to Divine Wisdom, entrusted to the Jesuits.
